Case Study

Tenant to Tenant Migration

Background:

A multinational corporation with more than 2,500 employees recently acquired a smaller company. The company needed to merge the smaller company’s Microsoft 365 tenant into their own to streamline operations and improve collaboration. However, the merger posed a significant challenge due to the complexity of merging Active Directory (AD) domains and ensuring a seamless transition for end-users.

Challenge:

The primary challenge of the project was to merge the smaller company’s Microsoft 365 tenant into the larger company’s tenant, while ensuring minimal disruption to end-users. The merger involved merging two separate AD domains, syncing users, groups, and other objects, and migrating all email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams data from the smaller company’s tenant to the larger company’s tenant. Additionally, the team had to ensure that all the configurations, permissions, and access rights of the users were preserved after the migration.

Solution:

Our team took a structured approach to the project, breaking it down into four phases: Discovery and planning, Identity setup and data migration, Domain and MX cutover, and Knowledge Transfer and closure. We began by reviewing the Active Directory environment and performing an assessment of the smaller company’s Microsoft 365 tenant. We also reviewed the licenses requirements and third-party tools required for the migration. Based on the review, we created a detailed migration plan and presented it to the client for approval.

In the second phase, we setup and configured Azure AD Connect and sync’d users with the destination tenant, ensuring the remediation of sync errors. We provisioned SharePoint Sites and OneDrive for Business, and then started the full migration of all email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams data. We monitored the migration and remediated errors, assigned delegate permissions and aliases to destination users, and migrated SharePoint and users’ OneDrive for business and Teams sites with GBs of data.

In the third phase, we performed final checks and verification of the data to ensure its health before cutover and created a mail flow cutover plan before making the final sync.

In the final phase, we provided end-user communication and validation, reviewed configurations with the client team, and provided admin level knowledge sharing and documentation.

Result:

Our team successfully completed the migration, ensuring minimal disruption to the end-users. All email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams data was migrated seamlessly, and all configurations, permissions, and access rights were preserved. The client was impressed with the quality of our work and the level of communication throughout the project. They also appreciated the end-user training and support provided by our team.

Conclusion:

The successful migration of the Microsoft 365 tenant from the smaller company to the larger company was a testament to our team’s expertise and ability to handle complex projects. Our approach of breaking down the project into structured phases, thorough planning, and open communication with the client contributed significantly to the project’s success. Our team’s commitment to delivering quality work and ensuring client satisfaction resulted in a successful project outcome.
